He stood on the edge of the beach, toes half buried in the sand, and asked himself “What’s the point?”
The answer was there was none. The damage had been done long before when he’d first come ashore, answering the tears of a young woman.
Seven tears had hit the water, one for each of the seas he loved, and so he’d answered her call, intrigued by the unfamiliar salt.
A bell. The fishing boat had returned from its morning hunt. “Dillion! Good lad. Tie ‘er off, will you?”
He caught the rope (too easily) and tied the boat to the shore (all too practiced).
The captain got off the boat ahead of his crew and clapped a hand on the young man’s shoulder. “Good to see, ye, Dillion. How is Maeveen?”
“Mae’s eager to see you home,” Dillion replied, watching the few surviving fish in the nets struggle till the end.
“Aye, that’d be her…” The captain laughed at the thought. “A’ight. I’ll get on home as soon as I wrap up here.”
“Anything I can do to help?” Dillion asked. Anything I can do to stall the inevitable? Anything I can do to avoid having to find a new excuse?
“Nah, my lads and I can handle it. Ye have plenty to worry about, I’m sure. Get on with ye.” The captain gave Dillion a push away from the sea.
With little beyond a polite goodbye, Dillion walked slowly away from the docks, holding onto the smell of the sea for as long as he could. The sounds of the surf scratched at his brain as badly as his dry skin. Oh the perpetually dry skin. He wanted his old skin back.
This wasn’t something Dillion had been told to watch for. He’d heard his sisters being lectured on the matter. “Never trust a human near your skin. Hide it if you go ashore. If a man gets a hold on it, he will never let you go.”
For the men, it was supposed to be tears. Seven tears to summon, and a promise made to the summoner. But the humans were lax in teaching their women, and all Maeveen knew to do was steal the seal skin to keep her Dillion ashore.
